Agriculture students at Tascosa and Caprock high schools spent the past few weeks collecting canned food for the “Ag Provides” initiative which promotes agriculture awareness across the nation. Texas Tech University’s College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources challenged all Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters in Texas to participate and collect food for use in their communities.

“One of the most important aspects of FFA is community service,” Trevor Williams, FFA and agriculture science teacher at Tascosa, explains. “If we can teach the future adults and leaders of this country to be selfless and contribute to society, our community and country will benefit tremendously.”

Encouraging students to donate canned food and learn more about agriculture in our community, the Tascosa and Caprock FFA chapters offered friendly competition to their campuses. The advisories with the most donations received an ice cream social and bragging right on campus.

“We hope to supplement the food supplies at the local food pantries with this project,” Trevor says. “We also want to emphasize through the Ag Provides initiative that agriculture does not start at the supermarket, it starts at the ground zero farmer.”

The schools which chose to participate in this canned food drive collected many hundreds of pounds of food and monetary donations to the High Plains Food Bank.

“By providing food to our community just like farmers and ranchers do every day, we can show others how important production agriculture is to everyone,” Amanda Head, agriculture science teacher at Caprock, says. “Our FFA students really did an amazing job giving back to their community and showing everyone what production agriculture is all about!”
